Bleary Business & Community Centre
This project involved the partial demolition, refurbishment and extension of the former Bleary Primary School site. Expenditure was minimised through the re-use of an existing building and the sense of community heightened through the refurbishment of a much-loved social hub. The centre includes a crèche space with associated offices, kitchen and toilets, plus community and business activity rooms.
The existing school building comprised double-height classroom spaces to the front elevations, with single-height ancillary offices and changing rooms to the rear.
Internal walls in the double-height area were largely removed to facilitate the inclusion a variety of steelwork elements: a full-height “picture frame” to support the original roof structure.
Single-height areas to the rear were demolished to provide space for an extension and external play area.
The grounds to the front of the building were redeveloped, with new car parking, surfacing, paths and landscaping. An external play area was provided to the side of the extension, with secure access via the crèche zone.
Storm and foul drainage systems were added: foul discharging into the local combined system, whilst the storm discharges to a local watercourse through a herringbone land drainage system. (Photographs courtesy of Brendan Loughran & Sons Ltd)
