The Heart, Walton-on-Thames


This is a large town-centre retail and housing development, comprising over 800,000 sq feet of suspended concrete. There is a single-storey basement carpark with double-height ground floor retail accommodation on the same footprint. The structure is concrete framed. The first floor acts as a transfer level and supports a further six floors of apartments.

Retail space is double height designed to accommodate intermediate mezzanine floors for variety of tenant requirements. These would be inserted after completion of the primary structure and envelope.

The structural engineers are responsible for the reinforced concrete design for the superstructure, including the first floor transfer level. The design work had to be progressed to meet with demanding detailing requirements and the construction programme. The project required over 500 detailed drawings produced in AutoCAD format.
