Gasworks Development, Belfast
Shortly after the Belfast Gasworks closed it was decided to create a public garden with office space. Taylor & Boyd provided structural engineering for two office contracts with business units and ‘own door’ offices.
Business Units: each building is essentially 3-storey with a 5-storey ‘core’ that includes a basement and upper gallery level. The structure is a reinforced concrete frame with ‘flat slab’ floor construction and externally clad in brick/block cavity walls. The pitched roofs are supported off timber-trussed rafters. Ground and basement slabs are suspended and supported either directly on pile caps or spanning between RC ground beams onto pile caps. Piles extend to depths of 9-12m to the underlying sandstone.
Own Door Offices: the buildings are generally 4-storey with additional basement and upper gallery levels over the ‘core’ stair/lift areas. The own-door offices were of a similar construction to the business units.
