Lisnaskea Library

With few details specified in advance, Taylor & Boyd contributed significantly to the Design Team’s development of this village library and community hub.

It is built in the space resulting from the demolition of two derelict properties on the main street in Lisnaskea and the footprint extends back from the main street and falls a further storey from street level, to create large, attractive spaces. Being located in a busy urban street the site was isolated from the public during construction. Following site investigations contaminated soil was remediated and adjacent buildings shored for stability before the library was constructed with a partial concrete basement with steel frame over to support the floors and the stone cladding.

Facilities extend over three levels. Open spaces are created with minimal intrusion from columns and with an internal void linking first floor and ground-floor spaces. Extensive glass walls and light wells maximise natural light and there is a cantilevered feature window for seating looking out onto the main street.

The children’s library is located on the ground floor, with reception desk and feature seating in the shape of a Viking longboat. First floor facilities include further book stock, computers/internet, newspapers, study areas, seating for parents and children and a lounge area. The library also offers a community conference room/exhibition space with whiteboard, projector and adjacent kitchen.
