Arvalee Special School, Omagh
This new special school was the first phase of multi-denominational, multi-sector Strule Shared Educational Campus on the site a former army barracks. Arvalee is at the highest end of the Lisanelly site and forms the main frontage on the Gortin Road. The entrance forms part of the boulevard approach to all schools. Levels were determined to tie in with the scheme for the entire campus.
Extensive earthworks were required to level the site for ease of access.
The building is single-storey and steel-framed with monopitch roofs to the classrooms and a north-light roof structure to the central core, assembly hall/gymnasium and school meals areas. A canopy was designed to cantilever off the main building and provide covered access for pupils, most of whom are generally transported to school by bus.
New play areas and MUGA pitch were provided.
Storm drainage was attenuated on-site and a new connection made to an existing discharge point at the Strule River.
BREEAM “Excellent” was achieved.
