Recycling Centre, Learmount Road, Claudy
Established on a flat site, this new recycling centre required Taylor & Boyd to design engineering for reinforced concrete ramps and a semi-circular road/platform from which the public can access various skips placed between elevated nibs projecting from the inner curve. Heavy vehicles service the skips at a lower level from a concrete turning area at the centre of the scheme.
Access is also provided from the raised platform to a covered area with curvilinear mono-pitch roof on the outer curve, in which materials including cardboard, glass, white goods, plastics, etc. are deposited.
A small steel-framed building on traditional strip/pad foundations was designed for staff lockers, changing facilities, restroom, toilet, etc.
The project involved retaining structures, ramps, guardrails and surfacing, with a fully integrated weighbridge.
Foul sewage drains through a percolation area to a Biodisc sceptic tank. Storm drainage passes through a petrol interceptor into the Faughan River.
There were no changes to the Learmount Road but the entrance to the amenity was resited and a car park established.
Taylor & Boyd liaised closely with Derry City Council to realise the Council’s proposal and create an innovative and efficient facility within budget and programme.
