Car park, bus shelter, roundabout on major road
Initially the project was intended to create a facility for passengers to access both bus and rail services into the centre of Belfast. A green-field site was acquired which bordered a railway line, the M2 motorway, and the A57 between Templepatrick and Larne.
TAYLOR+BOYD managed a team of consultants to develop the design. Many stakeholders were consulted and extensive surveys were undertaken, including topographical, geotechnical, ecology, archaeology and drainage. An Environmental Impact Assessment and a Transport Assessment were prepared.
Before project funding was approved, the railway halt was cancelled; however, the design had to allow for this development and possible car park extension in the future.
The site was improved with lime stabilisation and a level car park provided 428 spaces and a bus shelter. Attenuation ponds were installed to control storm water discharge with landscaped bunds providing visual separation between the parking area and surrounding lands. A roundabout was created at the junction of A57 and M2 slip roads
The project was delivered below budget and ahead of programme.
