Redevelopment of Grade B1 listed Victorian schoolhouse for community use
Completed in 1891, this Grade B1 listed Victorian building was originally a schoolhouse for the adjacent St. Columb’s Cathedral. Last used in 1995, it lay derelict for many years, during which its condition deteriorated due to water ingress.
TAYLOR+BOYD carried out a structural condition survey prior to design.
Restoration work took place in phases for financial reasons, and the project was seen through to successful completion.
The extent of the works included replacing the roof coverings, repairing cracks to the walls, replacing damaged timber floor structure, amending ends of roof timber trusses, strengthening chimney stacks, treating wet and dry rot throughout. The building was to be left in a state that would allow it to dry out, therefore the solid brick walls and floor structure were left exposed.
