PROJECT CHALLENGES:
Detailed commitment to client and multi-disciplinary team from initial design through to completion
New church and adjoining church hall to replace one which had been irreparably damaged by fire
The main square church comprises two portal frames in each direction with a small central frame sprung off the top to form a tower-like spire. A gallery was built timber and supported on steel beams to provide first-floor seating around two sides of the church.
The adjoining hall is two-storey and comprises precast concrete hollow core units supported on a braced steel frame. Both buildings are founded on traditional pad and strip foundations, some of which are on top of trench fill to suitable bearing levels.
The Project Engineer was responsible from initial scheme design through to structural completion: organizing the topographical survey and site investigations; detailed design; supervision and checking of all drawings; attendance at site meetings; site inspections; and as the day-to-day contact for queries from site during the construction.
