Respect for a listed heritage building; liaising with multiple authorities in central London
Conversion to a 5-star hotel of 6-storey 1920s building designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens
The building is protected by English Heritage so all structural work had to be integrated sympathetically with existing finishes. Close liaison with statutory agencies was required to achieve contemporary hotel standards while conserving an important historic/listed building.
The project involved internal re-modelling of the structure, additional guest space within the roof, and the provision of glazed roof lights over internal courtyards.
We based our design upon a detailed survey of the existing building and our assessment of load paths and the strengths of various elements. Internal brickwork was removed in favour of lightweight partitions and with the saving in loading, two additional ‘set back’ storeys were added.
This project required day-to-day involvement by both the project partner and associate. A follow-up contract converted the former basement swimming pool area into a business centre.
