• PROJECT CHALLENGES:

Variety of finishes and required methods of support; computer-modelled traffic flow

Bus station with forecourt and 8 stands for buses; waiting area, offices, toilets

TAYLOR+BOYD provided full Structural and Civil Engineering Services for a curved, steel-framed bus terminal on a busy town-centre site.

The structure comprised single- and double-storey steel framed and portalised structures on piled foundations. The external bus yard was concrete slab construction laid to varying gradients and falls to suit the constraints of the site boundaries and levels. The ground floor construction was of pre-stressed, precast concrete units, whilst at first floor level composite flooring construction was used.

The architectural design of the external fabric of the building resulted in a range of finishes requiring structural support. The building was given features and details to add interest at the perimeter. The city centre location of the site led to a number of challenges including the realignment of the existing carriageway and traffic control measures around the site. Design was aided by computer models that simulated bus and traffic flow around and within the site.
