Linenhall Library, Belfast
This project primarily involved the design of a link to connect the existing library with a neighbouring structures, and refurbishment work within the existing Library. The site is located in the heart of Belfast City Centre. The design of the linking structure was unusual as the floor levels varied in each building and the link had to provide access to all floors in both.
The main frame is of reinforced concrete. Foundations are reinforced concrete ground beams supported on mini-piles. The building is braced by a system of shear walls, one of which is a main spine wall running the full length of the building. The total area of the site is 75m2 and access for construction was an issue since the width of the site was approximately 5 metres.
