16 Seapoint, Bray
This project consisted of a two storey extension to the rear of a 170 year old stone masonry cottage in Bray, Co. Wicklow. The existing property is situated on a split level site which is viewed as single storey from Seapoint Road and two storey from the rear garden.
Taylor & Boyd carried out the design of the timber superstructure elements for the specialist timber frame contractor, IDomus Construction. The rear extension to the building was constructed using Huttemann glulam (HBE) wall and floor panels. HBE is a mass timber product consisting of Grade GL24 Norway Spruce lamella glued together to form 600mm wide panels. 600mm wide sections are then screwed together, with the shear connection enhanced due to the tongue and groove profile to the sides of each panel. HBE is a similar mass timber product to cross laminated timber (CLT), with the main difference being that lamella are glued in two directions in CLT, and HBE panels contain tongue and groove edges. Glulam transfer beams are present at first floor level to accommodate a change in floor layout, also incorporating a sun terrace.
