Ashleywood House Stables


This Grade B2-Listed property is a traditional 19th Century U-shaped stable block within the grounds of Ashleywood House. Built in 1870s, it had fallen into disrepair following relatively recent adaptations for various uses connected with the main House itself. Taylor & Boyd’s contribution to an extensive refurbishment in 2013 consisted of the total redevelopment of the stripped back ‘structural shell’ of the building.

Phased on-site work commenced in April 2011, beginning with a very substantial underpinning operation that included all perimeter walls of the building, together with all the main internal load-bearing and buttressing walls. This extensive underpinning was necessary due to the existence of relatively high-level traditional flat stone footings and the need to provide a new thicker floor construction (incorporating screed, insulation, DPM, concrete slab, etc) compliant with current building regulations. T&B designed a strict sequenced excavation and concreting process to ensure that the stability of the building was not compromised during the process.

Other main structural elements included the provision of new floors, at both ground floor level and first floor level, together with the provision of a new roof, masonry repair works and all associated internal supporting steelwork beams and posts. (Photographs courtesy of QMAC)
