Clonard Street, Belfast
This is a development consisting of 166 new houses and apartments on a brown-field site in a depressed area of Belfast. Existing industrial buildings were demolished except for a large mill building, which was converted into new apartments. The new blocks differ in size and extend up to 5 stories high with a ground floor deck area.
Typically load-bearing masonry was adopted in this development with reinforced concrete frames being used to incorporate the ground floor car park efficiently.
Taylor & Boyd advised on the demolition phases of the project and designed all structural elements.
Our Structural Engineers were able to justify the reuse of the main mill building with minor structural enhancement. Original masonry and timber elements were justified and then exposed as features. The reuse of materials had environmental advantages and Eco Homes ‘Good’ level was achieved for the project.
