Craigavon Area Hospital – Waste Transfer Station & Energy Centre
Here Taylor & Boyd designed a new waste transfer station then extended the existing building to develop an energy centre. Work within the operational hospital site required minimal disruption to routines through carefully planned phasing; it was also necessary to agree construction methods that contained noise and dust.
Significant reinforced concrete retaining wall structures were designed on a sloping site.
Existing drainage was diverted and new storm/foul sewers integrated with the filtered hospital system.
As maximum clearance, clear spans and side openings at two levels were required for the movement of lorries, the waste transfer station was designed as a steel portal frame with duo-pitch roof. Pad and strip foundations were used for both structures but the risk of undermining adjacent buildings required particular care when designing the mass concrete foundations for the portal frame. The issue of weight from fully-laden lorries was addressed with pre-stressed, pre-cast plate flooring on a sub-structure of blockwork. A low bund wall was added to ensure the containment of any spilt chemical or clinical waste within an upstand.
The energy centre was designed as a braced-steel frame and a mono-pitch roof on traditional pad and strip foundations. Both buildings were finished with profile metal cladding.
Taylor & Boyd designed the yard slab area and used AutoTrack to determine optimal vehicular routes that would integrate with the busy hospital site.
Trees were planted to screen the new buildings from neighbouring homes.
