Halifax Call Centre, Belfast
The redevelopment of this brownfield site comprised three main contracts, including a major call-centre, business units and ‘own door’ offices.
It is a 5-storey steel-framed building with composite floor construction. Others options were considered but this solution proved to be the most cost-effective. Foundations had to be piled all round and had to be driven through the buried foundations from structures that formed part of the original gas works. Once detected, piling was designed to avoid the walls of these chambers and so minimise costs. Localised pockets of contaminated ground were identified and the problems remediated.
Taylor & Boyd’s structural engineers worked closely with the architect and design team to produce an aesthetically pleasing solution with glazed elevation and exposed steelwork trusses in a sports hall.
The Civil Engineering team worked closely with government departments and transport bodies to deliver the drainage solution. This included bringing drainage across a railway line and minimising costs for the cut-and-fill works required on a difficult site.
