Rathmore Grammar School
This major extension and re-configuration of a school in Belfast included the renovation of a grade B1 Listed convent building for conversion into modern classrooms. General classrooms, a lecture/drama theatre, a library, a staffroom, specialist suites for art, business studies, careers, home economics, information technology and music, a canteen and Sixth Form centre were among the extensive range of new facilities.
As the school was in a poor state of repair detailed structural inspections were necessary, covering: timber trusses and other roof elements; upper and ground floors; staircases; stonework and masonry. Structural repairs included sensitive adjustment of a below-height cast iron handrail on the staircase. Specialist grading analysis allowed first floor timbers to be retained and justified. Damp proofing was carried out to a semi-basement.
Construction was phased to allow the school to remain fully operational throughout the works. (Photographs courtesy of Todd Architects.)
