St John’s High School, Sports Complex
New sports hall and adjoining minor sports hall with associated changing facilities for the school and local community.
A site investigation indicated ground conditions requiring traditional pad and strip foundations on ‘trench fill’ concrete to suitable bearing for the entire building. The steep typography necessitated reinforced concrete retaining walls around the building to address differences in level.
The superstructure to the main and minor sports halls are steel-framed with feature roof trusses over a main hall, with a unique sloping steel and timber framed roof light over the minor hall. The aesthetic appeal of the main hall feature trusses has been achieved with the use of structural hollow sections.
The changing rooms, stores, general offices and toilets were all constructed as lean-to steel structures to the main hall.
Associated civil engineering design included both foul and storm drainage, exterior drystack masonry retaining walls around the carpark, campus road and footpath links to existing school routes.
