Teelin Transport Hub, Co Donegal
This development consists of a tourism transport hub located at Teelin, Co. Donegal to facilitate visitors to the cliffs and walkways of the Sliabh Liag tourist region.
The Hub consists of a café, reception, toilets and ‘double-height’ exhibition space, with associated picnic areas and car/bus parking areas provided by the Council.
Taylor & Boyd LLP provided Structural Engineers for the project. The client required a very environmentally sensitive design and favoured the use of renewable materials in place of the more traditional structural techniques.
The selected design solution utilised exposed glue laminated timber frames (known as ‘glulam’) for the main primary structure, with prefabricated timber Structural Insulated Panels (known as SIPs) forming the walls and roof, while providing stability to the frames.
Taylor & Boyd worked closely with M&E Consultants to create sufficient service voids to conceal the services, with the exposed glulam frame structure expressed as an architectural feature.
Traditional concrete strip and reinforced concrete pad foundations (on deeper ‘trench fill’ concrete) were provided to support both the structural frames and the suspended concrete ground floor. (Photographs courtesy of Eamon O’Neill)
