The Heart, Walton-on-Thames

This is a large town-centre retail and housing development, comprising over 800,000 sq feet of suspended concrete floor plates. There is a single-storey basement carpark with double-height ground floor retail accommodation on the same footprint. The structure is concrete framed, with the first floor actsing as a transfer level, and supporting a six floors of superstructure apartments.

The ground floor retail space is double height to accommodate intermediate mezzanine floors for variety of tenant requirements, inserted after completion of the primary structure and envelope.

The design work had to be progressed to meet with demanding detailing requirements and the construction programme, requiring the production of 500+ detailed drawings. (Photographs courtesy of Whitbybird)
