Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children
This purpose-built, state-of-the-art hospital was created on a previously undeveloped site within the Royal Victoria Hospital complex in Belfast.
The structure comprises a two-storey reinforced concrete flat slab frame with roof plant area, on pad foundations and a part-basement. A feature has been made of the link between the two main blocks (otherwise known as the ‘street’), which comprises architecturally pleasing glass-clad structural steelwork, with two link bridges.
At ground level access to the main entrance for accident and emergency is via an integral, suspended ramped roof structure. Taylor & Boyd was responsible for both structural and civil engineering design on the project – including the Flying Saucer sculpture.
